It’s a Work in Progress

I spent a little time Monday working on the Jol quilt…

I added the first border, which is made of white 2-1/2 inch strips…

I think a 2-inch finished border will be too wide. I really don’t like the way it looks. So, I think I will cut the border down so it will finish at one inch. I am making a piano key border with 2-1/2 inch strips of the quilt fabrics…

…so I think it needs that stop border. But it just looks so…white. But, I think it will work out just fine if it is smaller than it is now.

For today, I will work on piecing the piano key borders. I think that will go quickly. I will also probably do some more on my crochet project; I’m making progress on that and I hope to be able to share some photos of that in a month or so.

That’s about it from here. I will be linking up at:

What’s Up This Week

This week I plan to finally work on Jol…

I have cleared out some things in the sewing room and moved tables (and stuff) around, and I’m ready to get to some sewing. I will add a white border to the quilt top, then get started on piecing the second border.

I will also get some work done on a crochet afghan, and I would like to try to finish up the Autumn’s Call embroidery. It is really close.

I have a few things to do outside the house this week…tomorrow is Bee and we are also heading to the farmers’ market. Later this week I have to take both beasts in for check-ups. I may need to get this one’s eyes checked since she is spending a lot of time watching squirrels on the iPad 😊

And this one will need a bath today or tomorrow…

She needs to be ready for camping in a couple of weeks. Yay!

For today I will continue straightening out the sewing room and working on Jol. I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Orange and (Black &) White Quilt – Done!

I finally finished this strip quilt…

I’ve been calling this the Orange and Black & White quilt for a while, because I don’t have a better name for it. I finished hand stitching down the binding yesterday, and since tomorrow is the spring UT – Knoxville “Orange and White” football game, I’m now calling this the Orange and (Black &) White quilt. Very inventive. And since this is also one of my goals for the Second Quarter of the 2017 Finish-A-Long, I can mark another project off my (long) list of “to-dos”!

I battled with the quilting machine while working on this quilt. I spent many hours over several days picking out quilting stitches because my tension just wasn’t working. Here are some of the stitches I picked out…

It doesn’t look too bad there on the top, but on the back are a whole lotta birds’ nests. Not pretty. So, I got everything un-quilted, then worked on it until I got the tension right. Finally, I was able to get it quilted with an overall meandering pattern.

Here is the back of the quilt.

The lighter fabric is left over from backing from another quilt, and the darker fabric is some black and orange from my shelves. I think it will work out just fine…but it was a pain in the neck to pick out the stitches of black thread from that dark fabric!

I also used some cute black with white dots fabric for the binding.

Over all, I am very pleased with how it turned out. It measures at 54 inches square, so it will work nicely as a lap quilt on the couch or in the car. This is really all I have worked on for the past week, so there’s nothing else to show for my time 😊 But, it’s a finish!

I will be linking up with Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict for Can I Get a Whoop! Whoop! I will also link up at the end of June for the SecondQuarter finishes for the 2017 Finish-A-Long at She Can Quilt.

For today, I have some computer work to do this morning, and I really need to do some cleaning and straightening up around here. We are expecting some nasty storms by this afternoon (and tomorrow afternoon) with large hail and 60 mph winds, so I may just hunker down with some crochet and hope the power stays on.

I hope all is well with you all, and have a wonderful weekend!

Needle and Thread Thursday

Busy day today…I have to run some errands this morning and this afternoon, but I hope to spend at least a little time in the sewing room. If not, there is always the weekend.

Yesterday I finally finished off the 36 Quilts of Valor blocks…

These are large blocks, something like 12 inches finished. I was surprised at how long it took me to piece these! But they are done now and I can turn them into our guild so they can be pieced into a Quilt of Valor.

Next on my list is to finish this Orange and Black & White strip quilt…

This is one of my Q2 goals for the 2017 Finish-A-Long, and I’m ready to get it done.  I found some fabric to use to piece the backing…

The black and white fabric (in the middle) is left over from backing for the Easy Street quilt, and the orange and black fabric is about a yard long and was on the free table at the guild meeting this month. This morning I searched the sewing room and came across some fabric for the binding, along with some extra batting that will work. I hope to piece the backing today or tomorrow and then load this quilt onto the long arm frame. Maybe this weekend I can get it quilted. I think there is a finish in the near future!

I need to get moving. I have to run to the eye doctor for my new glasses (yay!) and then by the library. Today is hubby’s last day at work (retirement, yay!) and he will be home shortly after lunch, then we have to run out for a couple of more errands. For now, I will link up at My Quilt Infatuation for Needle and Thread Thursday. Head on over for some wonderful projects.

Busy Week Ahead

I have a busy week ahead. I have some errands to do this week, plus I have Bee tomorrow, then I’m going to a (new to me) guild meeting Friday morning. On top of that, this is hubby’s last week of work. Retirement! Woo hoo! All of that to say that I hope to get some time in the sewing room.

Yesterday I finished up this crochet scarf…

Scarves are my “go-to” projects when I want to crochet something. In this case, I wanted to use up the remainder of a skein from another project. It worked out just long enough for a scarf.

For the past several days I have been working on blocks for Quilts of Valor. I have 9 completed and on my design wall…

I have kits for 27 more blocks and I am working on piecing the strip sets (4 to a block) to make up the blocks. It’s not hard; it’s just slow going. I plan on getting these blocks finished up this week.

Once those are completed, I plan on piecing a backing and loading the Orange and Black & White quilt onto the long arm…

I don’t have a better name for it right now. I think I will look for my largest black and white pieces of fabric and use those for the back. Maybe I will throw in an orange fabric somewhere, just cuz. I think I have batting for this, and I will probably just quilt it with black thread, so I have that covered. It’s just a matter of doing it. Finishing this quilt is one of my Second Quarter goals for the 2017 Finish-A-Long, so I hope to get moving on it this week.

Once that is on the long arm, I will get to work on adding the borders to the Jol quilt top…

I didn’t get around to this last week, so I hope to finally work on it this week. I am adding a 2-inch border around the blocks, then I need to piece a piano key border to add. I will see at that point if I am going to add any more borders. My initial plans for this was to make a wall quilt, but I will probably end up using it on a bed instead.

That’s my plan for this week. I still have a little more to go on Autumn’s Call…

…and I work on that when I’m upstairs while we’re watching TV or when I’m waiting on dinner, so I will work that project in when I can. I also have several crochet projects which are easy to pick up or take-along when needed. I’ll never be not busy this week!

I hope you have a wonderful week ahead and I will be linking up at the following:

RSC – April Kitten Blocks

I spent a little time this week working on the Kittens blocks for this year’s Rainbow Scrap Challenge. I finally made the second red Kitten…

This one has yellow eyes. I wanted to try it, because I plan to make a calico kitten at some point with yellow eyes in honor of our miss kitty…

Here is what the red Kitten block looked like when I finished it, with just the yellow eyes and no pupils…

Ummm…a little different. So, I just fused some black pupils to the yellow eyes to tone it down a little. I think it turned out just fine.

I also made two multi-color Kittens blocks for April. The first one I made turned out just fine and I’m pleased with it…

I’ve had this multi-color polka dot-ish fabric for quite a while and have been looking to use it in a project. This seemed to fit just fine.

The second multi-color Kittens block didn’t turn out so well…

Ugh. I really like this polka dot fabric, but I really don’t like this block. It looks like a rabbit. And I figured a pink nose would work better than black with this white “fur”, but no. It kind of gets lost in there. Also, there are five different block patterns in this quilt, and this particular face pattern is my least favorite, so I think that contributes to it. I am planning on trying this face pattern once more with light orange and cream colored fabrics, so hopefully that will look a bit better. I think I would prefer less contrast in the fur fabric on this block. I’m keeping it in the mix right now. It can always go on the back when the time comes to put the top together.

So now I have 9 blocks done for the Kittens quilt top…

I want to have a pretty even mix of facial patterns, so I will probably keep them sorted this way.

That’s it from here. We are having our (hopefully!) last cold weekend this spring. I’m ready to get into the garden! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Friday Finishes

I have one finish this week…the Snowflake table topper

This is a top I finished about a year ago. It was originally meant for donation to the small quilt sale at our quilt guild Quilt Show last summer, but I never finished it. Instead, I finished up a snowman wall hanging similar to this one and donated it…

I spent Sunday and Monday quilting the Snowflake table topper, then attached the binding, and spent Monday evening hand stitching down the binding. It’s done and I turned it in on Tuesday night, so that mission is accomplished!

This is one of my (many) goals for the Second Quarter of the 2017 Finish-A-Long at She Can Quilt, so I will be linking up over there in June when the finishes party opens.

I have pieced some blocks this week, and yesterday I pieced nine Quilt of Valor blocks…

The strip units are fine to piece; but the block itself is not intuitive to me so I have been having to really concentrate to piece the units into a block. That may sound weird, but I think I just have a plain rail fence in mind, but this is put together differently. I like how the quilt top looks on the design wall, but it is just not a natural pattern for me. Anyway, I have 27 more block kits to piece, so I will be busy with this for the next week.

I hope your week has been good and you have a wonderful weekend!

A New View on Thursday

I have an eye doctor appointment this morning, so I won’t be getting to the sewing room until later today. Hopefully, I will have some new glasses soon and he won’t have any bad news about my eyes this time!

I’ve been working on a few different things this week, including some blocks for Quilts of Valor, and my Wonky Halloween 9-Patch. I completed three blocks for the 9-Patch quilt…

Early in the week I completed a table topper for our small quilt sale at our guild quilt show this summer…

Today I will probably put the first border on the Jol quilt top…

…and I will work on more QOV blocks. That should fill up my day.

Gotta get moving – have a wonderful Thursday!

The Final Snow of the Season

At least I hope so! Yesterday I started quilting this snowflake table topper…

This is from the pattern “Winter Trio” by Laundry Basket Quilts.

I made this top about a year ago for our guild Quilt Show small quilt sale, but never finished it. I had the blue background from a guild challenge from last year, and had plenty of fabric. It is also the backing fabric for this table topper.

I decided to go ahead and get it done for this summer’s Quilt Show, so I started quilting it yesterday. I am quilting the background in a diamond cross hatch using a walking foot. I have never done any kind of cross hatch background quilting, so I figured this small quilt was a good place to try it out. I plan to quilt around each snowflake as well. Bonus – this is one of my Q2 goals for the 2017 Finish-A-Long, so I’m on my way to my first second quarter finish!

Today I’m hoping to finish up the quilting, then attach the binding by machine. My goal is to have the binding ready to hand stitch down at our quilting Bee tomorrow.

I hope you all have a wonderful Monday!

2017 Finish-A-Long Second Quarter Goals

It’s time for another round of goals, this time for the Second Quarter of the 2017 Finish-A-Long.  I completed two of three goals for Q1, and I have a much longer list for Q2. We will see what happens!

First, I will list my neutral Gypsy Wife quilt…again…

I have the backing, batting, and thread for this. All I need is the nerve. I guess I haven’t exactly decided how to quilt it yet and I’m putting it off. However, it’s time to get it done.

My second goal is to complete this blue snowflake table topper…

I made this a year ago for our small quilt sale at our guild quilt show, but never got it quilted. I plan to work on this one in April and get it quilted and bound so I can donate it to our small quilt sale for this year’s quilt show.

Third, I hope to complete Jol…

This is also my April UFO to work on, so I expect to make some progress on it this month anyway. I plan on adding a two-inch white border all the way around it, then use the fabrics in the quilt top to make a piano key border. I’m looking forward to working on this one again. And once again, I have the fabric for the backing, along with the batting ready to go for this. I probably also have some thread that will work.

Number Four is the Wonky Halloween 9-Patch…

This is a stack-and-whack type of project and is rather quick and easy to do. I enjoy working on it and the blocks go together pretty quickly. I have 30 more blocks to complete, then I am sashing it with solid black. I haven’t decided if I’m adding borders. I’ll see how big I want it when the time comes.

Number Five is the Hourglass quilt…

I have quite a few blocks made, and they go together quickly. I have more fabric cut out for blocks, so I will be working those into my schedule when I can. I would like to get this one completed by summer. It will be a nice bright addition to our bedroom.

Number Six is to complete Vintage Skate…

This is a wall hanging that just needs to be quilted and bound. I think if I spend several days focusing on this I can get it done. I’ll be glad to be able to hang it up at Christmas.

And finally, Number 7 on my list is to complete this strippy quilt…

The center strips are from a bright orange/yellow jelly roll, and the black and white strips are from my stash that I wanted to use up. I had fun making this quilt top, and even though I was thinking about Halloween when I made it, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a Halloween quilt. I just need to piece a backing, then get it quilted and bound.

That’s my (long) list of Goals for Q2 of the 2017 Finish-A-Along. I will be linking up at She Can Quilt. Head over to see what everyone else plans to work on for the next few months.

Have a wonderful Sunday!

April – Spring is Here!

I barely touched my to-do list for March. I guess I got sidetracked with other things. I did not meet my One Monthly Goal, and all I did with my March UFO was to open the box and look at it and say, “Maybe later.” I guess I did make a little progress on my UFO because I bought a spool of thread to quilt it when I was at a quilt show last week. But first, I need to finish the top!

I did get one more item crossed off my list yesterday for March. I was able to put together the second candle block for the “Have a Jolly Little Christmas” QAL…

In just under the wire!

Yesterday I also finished the last of the February Quilty365 blocks…

Now I’m only one month (or 31 days) behind!

For April, I’ve decided not to worry about a One Monthly Goal. I will get back to that next month. I do want to try to make some progress – and catch up – with some QALs and the Two-Step Mystery. The UFO (at Patchwork Times) for the month of April is #1, which is my Jol quilt. I hope to get some work done on that this month. Here is where I’m at on that project…

I want to add a border to it before quilting it. Maybe I can at least get that far in April.

Tomorrow I will be posting my list for the Second Quarter of the 2017 Finish-A-Long at She Can Quilt, and I hope to get working on those projects this month as well.

So, April will be spent in the garden, working on some blocks, and hopefully a little camping. The weather is staying pretty warm now, so I think this weekend we can make sure the air conditioner is working properly and we will try to get in a bit of yard work. Changes are in the air here, so I’m trying to just go with the flow this month.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and a fabulous April!
