Design Wall Monday

My design wall hasn’t really changed much recently. I think these cats have been hanging around for a few weeks, off and on. I hope to get more of them done as the summer continues. We’ll see what happens.

Stash Report Week 26 of 2014

This week I had nothing come in and nothing go out.

Last Stash Report I decided to set a goal each week to work (harder) towards reducing my stash. For the upcoming week I plan to make a block from a wall hanging I made for my daughter many years ago. I will be making this summer cat…

It is one of the blocks from this wall hanging called “A Cat for All Seasons” by Patrick Lose.

I will probably not put the beach ball on the block because I am going to make this into a mini quilt for my table top quilt stand. The mini quilt can only be about 11-1/2 inches wide, and the beach ball would make it too big. This will be my summer mini quilt, once 4th of July is over and I take down my Star mini.

I’ll be linking up with the Stash Report over at Patchwork Times. Head on over to see how everyone is using up their stash.

June Accomplishments

I didn’t think I set a lot of goals for June, but I still didn’t get to most of them. This month had interruptions of all kinds, and life (and the garden) just seemed to take over my time. However, I will talk about what I DID accomplish this month in the sewing room!

For A Lovely Year of Finishes for June, my goal (#2 at the June goal Linky Party) was to complete the blocks for the Folk Art Cats quilt. Well, for the second time this year, I didn’t reach my AYOLF goal. Bummer. But, I did work on it and will continue to work on it. Here is where I’m at so far…

I have one more background for a block done, but I’m stitching the cat onto it right now, so it’s not on the design wall. After that, six more blocks to go. I know I won’t finish this in June, though. Maybe I’ll finish it up next month or at least by the end of summer. I’ll be linking up with the ALYOF June goal party here.

I did start a project for the NewFO Challenge at Cat Patches. I won this charm pack a few months ago from a linky party for ALYOF…

Ever since, I’ve been wanting to do something with the fabric. So, this week I decided to slice the squares in half diagonally, and sew a white strip in the middle to make split half-square-triangle blocks. This is what they look like on my design wall…

I will be adding white sashing between all the blocks. I kind of like this lightning bolt pattern with the cooler colors in columns and the warmer colors together in columns. I don’t know if I will keep them in this arrangement, but I probably will. I hope to get this top put together next month. I will be linking up with the June NewFO linky party.

I also participated in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge at So Scrappy. The color for June is yellow, so I got busy and put together some squares to build house blocks.

I also put together one of the yellow border houses to see how they will look, and I think I like the way they will turn out.

I really only worked on a couple of other projects in June. I was able to get a mini quilt made to hang on my table top quilt stand for 4th of July.

I was also able to made several mug rugs for 4th of July. These will probably be gifts, so don’t tell anyone!

So, that’s it. Not much done in the sewing room, but we did get most of our deck done (we’ll finish with the railing this weekend), and I did spend part of the month sick…so I’ll give myself a pass. There’s always next month!

Tuesday Charms

This is what I have done so far this week. I’ve had this charm pack that I won from Stitches ‘n’ Giggles through A Lovely Year of Finishes linky party a few months ago. Here are the individual fabrics…

I’ve been itching to do something with them. I think I didn’t like the little squares of fabric sitting around in the black hole that is my sewing room. I was afraid they’d get lost somewhere. So, I cut them all diagonally, then sewed a white strip between the triangles to make some split half-triangle square blocks. I’ve put them in a “lightning bolt” design with cool colors and warm colors together inside the white “bolts”. I don’t know if it will stay this way. I may play with it a bit. I will be putting white sashing between all the blocks. I’m looking forward to seeing what it becomes!

Stash Report Week 25 of 2014

This week I finished a slew of mug rugs for 4th of July, so I actually used up about a yard of fabric this week. Yay! Here are a couple of them…

I need to work a little harder on planning HOW to decrease my stash (and make my numbers a little better in the mean time). To do that, I really need to finish up some projects I have sitting around the sewing room. So, for the upcoming week, I really want to focus on finishing the blocks for my Folk Art Cat quilt. It won’t reduce my numbers for next week, but it will get me farther along the path. I have a few small quilts and wall hangings that are ready to be quilted also, so I may add one of those to my To-Do list for next week. That will clear out some fabric once one of them gets done.

I’ll be linking up with the Stash Report over at Patchwork Times. Head on over to see how everyone is using up their stash.

RSC – Yellow Border House

I put together one of the yellow houses for the border of my house block quilt. I think I’m happy with it. It doesn’t take long to put together, so I can probably get them done pretty quickly. These finish at 6 inch blocks.

You can see more lovely June yellow projects at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2014.

Throwback Thursday

This is the Speedy Turtle Quilt. I made this for one of my sisters back in 1995. She raised tortoises (still does) and Speedy was one of them. The turtles are made with some really pretty green fabrics, which don’t translate well in this old photo. This was hand quilted and I remember that it was a very emotional time for me while stitching it because my sister was ill at the time and I wanted to get it finished for her. I did, and she’s fine, so it’s all good!

Stash Report Week 24 of 2014

I hope all the dads out there have a wonderfully Happy Father’s Day today! Here’s a gratuitous photo of my dad J

I did use up a little bit of fabric this week…1/2 yard to make this 4th of July mini quilt. I headed over to Joann’s this week to pick up some D├ęcor Bond for the mini quilt and some thread, and they happened to have their fat quarters on sale for half price. So…a few jumped into my cart. Actually some fat quarter bundles too because I had a couple of 50% off coupons and I really needed some light blue fabrics…really, I did. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it!

Lessons Learned

I’ve been sick this week, so I haven’t gotten a whole lot done. But, I was able to finish quilting and binding a mini quilt I made for my table top quilt stand.

The star is paper pieced and is from a pattern by Carolyn Cullinan McCormick in the current (#158) Quiltmaker magazine. I used red, white, and blue variegated thread for the quilting and I must admit that in theory I love the idea of variegated thread; in practice, not so much. I don’t like how the white thread disappears onto the white fabric on this.

It just makes the red and blue parts of the thread look like dirt or something on the white fabric. Had the entire thing been made from the blue and red fabrics it would have been fine. The colors just stick out on the white fabric, and not in a good way. However, overall, I like it and I’ll live with it.

I hope your month of June is going well. Mine is going too fast! I can’t believe it’s almost half over. I’ve barely made a dent in my goals list for June. Just not much sewing going on at the house so far this month. I hope your June is more productive!

By the way, Happy Friday the 13th!

Throwback Thursday

Here’s another golden oldie…the colors are a bit faded in the photo…

I made this wall hanging of a moose for my parents for Christmas of 1995 in honor of their membership in the Moose Lodge where they lived. It was a pattern from a magazine…I can’t remember which one…and it was actually a Christmas pattern with a Christmas ornament hanging from the moose’s antler. I changed it up a bit with some different colors so they could hang it up year around if they wanted to. I thought he turned out pretty cute J.

Design Wall Monday – June 9, 2014

I got one more cat block appliqued. It wasn’t until I saw the photo of it on the design wall that I realized I forgot to applique the collar and tag onto it. I’ll take care of that. Hopefully I’ll have more to show next Monday!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge – Yellow June

There is a whole lot of construction going on at my house…not necessarily in the sewing room. We are rebuilding our backyard deck, so my time has been spent doing that most mornings, and then I’m not really in the mood to focus on sewing. I’m a bit worn out with the physical labor and hot/humid weather. BUT…I do have my yellow squares done!

This is another month where I had plenty of yellow scraps and made extra smaller squares for the border houses. These squares really don’t take much time, so I can generally get them done in one sitting…assuming all goes as I plan! Hopefully, by the end of the month I can get one of the larger squares built into a house block. Maybe I’ll even try to figure out how I’m going to do the border houses and get some of those done.

Other than that, I’ve really not done much sewing this week. I did join the local quilt guild this week, so I guess that’s something! Otherwise, I’ve done a little hand stitching on a block for the Folk Art Cats quilt. I’m hoping to have that block done this weekend. I was also able to get a little work done on Step 5 of Celtic Solstice, and I started on a mini quilt for 4th of July to hang on my table top quilt stand. I’m hoping to take time to quilt and bind that so it’s ready to hang at the end of June. I’ll have all of Sunday afternoon to myself, so we’ll see if I make it into the sewing room…or if I’m out pulling up deck boards!

I’ll be linking up with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2014. Head on over to see other lovely yellow projects.

Design Wall Monday – June 2, 2014

I finally have something on my design wall! These are three blocks from the Folk Art Cats quilt from Stitchin’ Post. I received the pattern in 2013 for Mother’s Day and started on it, but didn’t get very far. My primary goal for this month is to finish piecing all twelve blocks and adding the cats onto each block with hand applique. I’ve done the embroidery on the first two blocks for the cats’ faces, but I’m not going to worry about that for this month. I just want the blocks pieced and appliqued. I’m not very happy with the block on the right…there’s not enough contrast between the cat and the background of the block, but I’m not going to worry about changing the fabric in that cat until I’m done with all the blocks and then I’ll see what I want to do.

Stash Report Week 22 of 2014

Nothing came in this week, but I used up a yard of fabric between a mug rug I made a couple of weeks ago (I didn’t count it yet) and some fabric I used to practice free motion quilting earlier this week.

I’ll be linking up with the Stash Report over at Patchwork Times. Head on over to see how everyone is using up their stash.

June Goals

I have lots and lots of ideas for the month of June. It will probably be a much busier month for outdoor stuff, what with the garden starting to produce (and needing weeding); plus we are putting in a new deck, so I will probably be working on that for the next week or so. We’ll see how it goes. Plus my birthday is at the end of the month, so maybe we’ll be busy with that!

But, this month I decided to set my primary goals for the month based on a theme: cats! I am a cat person (though I do love dogs and other critters very much as well…and we have two dogs too). And 14 years ago this month, we adopted our two sweet girls…

They were just itty bitty when we got them, now they are big ol’ gals - With totally opposite personalities! But, they live a life of luxury with plenty of quilts to sleep on!

So, being a cat person, I have plenty of cat themed quilt patterns and I have started plenty of them. I haven’t finished many, but then it just means I have plenty to keep me busy, right? I would like to get some more finishes, though.

First, for my June goal for A Lovely Year of Finishes, I would like to finish piecing the blocks for the Folk Art Cat pattern from StitchinPost.com. I received this pattern as a gift for Mother’s Day in 2013 and have only gotten 3 blocks pieced so far. My goal for ALYOF is to complete piecing all twelve blocks, including the cat appliques on each block. I’m hand stitching the appliques, so this may take a while! I’ve embroidered the faces on the first two, but I’m not worrying about getting that part done this month. I just want the blocks done. I’m doing the sashing and borders a bit differently than in the pattern. I'll post some photos as the month goes along.

Next, I would like to finish the paper pieced borders on the Sawtooth Cats quilt top and possibly get another border on, so I can call this top done.

Another “cat” quilt I want to work on is my Kitties in the Middle quilt.

This block is called many different things, but one name is Puss in the Corner. I’m using my cat fabrics for the center of the block, so I’m calling it Kitties in the Middle. The blocks go together quickly and I would really like to get this one completed so I can quilt it soon.

Ok, so those three things I REALLY want to work on in June - if there is the time (and the inclination!) I have several other items I would like to work on as well.

First, I again want to participate in the NewFO Challenge at Cat Patches. I have plenty of cat projects to choose from, but I will most likely quilt up a little Halloween wall hanging quilt I just bought recently. It would be nice to get something done start to finish in a month.

I also would like to make a July 4th themed mini quilt for my table top quilt stand. I have plenty of red, white and blue fabrics, so I think I can take one day this month and get one made.

I again want to participate in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. The color for June is yellow. So I will try to get some squares put together so I can make some more house blocks.

Also, Judy at Patchwork Times has her Scrappy Challenge 2014 going on. I’ll see if I can’t do better in June and make up some of her blocks when she puts out the design.

Other than that, a few other things that have been on my goal lists for previous months…make some purses/pouches for gifts; make some more mug rugs; start on the vintage hankies quilt; work on the dragon quilt; and work on Celtic Solstice (I’m on Step 5).

I think that’s way more than plenty!
